29 Very Short Stories

29 Very Short Stories

(2017)

"You watching this?"

"Not really."

"You want to watch something else?"

"Nah.  I've had enough TV for one night."

"What should we do?"

"You want to speak to the dead?"

"What?  Really?"

"Sure."

"You've done this before?"

"Couple times.  Little something I picked up along the way."

"So... it's like a séance?"

"Kinda.  But not exactly."  Sara could see she had his interest.  She played out a little more line.

"There's not a Ouija board involved, is there?" Steve asked dismissively.

"No, that's kid stuff."

"Are you saying you're a medium?"

"No, not at all.  It's a talent anyone can develop.  But like most things in life, you have to work at it."

"You're just full of hidden talents, aren't you?"

"Mmm hmm."

"So how does this work?"

"It works best when you have a specific question for a specific person in mind.  If your thoughts are unfocused, it makes communicating them that much harder.  Living or dead."

"Makes sense, I guess.  Do we have to wait for midnight or anything like that?"

"No, now is fine.  You want to try this now?"

"Sure."

"OK, give me five minutes to get everything set up."

Taking inspiration from Raymond Chandler, Shirley Jackson, The Twilight Zone, H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, and Welcome to Night Vale, P. Canole’s 29 Very Short Stories twist and turn through small town life with witty dialogue and dry humor.
